Black Widows

(Erin Jordan and The Whiskey Romance)
September, 2008
Erin Jordan
Behind the leafy elms at the bottom of the drive
Peering through those windows with squinty eyes
The school boys walk by with their books and with their friends
Never really knowing where the sidewalk really ends

Beware of noises in the night
Beware of little things that bite
Beware of black widows
And things that eat your heart away

She said "I'm lonely - I thing you're lonely too"
Why don't you just come inside and try some witches brew
Dusty furniture and cobwebs everywhere
A sad sad melody from the victrola by the stairs

Beware of noises in the night
Beware of little things that bite
Beware of black widows
And things that eat your heart away

So come into my home - this dusty silver web
Water for the thirsty and food for the unfed
Forgiveness for the guilty and sleep for the tired
Release from all your sorrows and all earthly desire
Don't it make you sad - It almost makes me ill
To think there isn't more to life
Except to mate and kill

Beware of noises in the night
Beware of little things that bite
Beware of black widows
And things that eat your heart away
